Download the free Trash Day demo on Steam, see what its one area covers versus the six in the full game, and fix wagon flips, wheels, and checkpoints.

Official media

The Trash Day demo is free on Steam right now, and it is the easiest way to test the game's physics chaos before the full launch on October 13, 2026. This Trash Day demo guide covers where to download it, what the single playable area includes, and what to do when your wagon flips, drops a wheel, or misses a checkpoint. It also answers the one question the official sources do not, namely whether the demo stays playable after the full game releases.

How to Download the Trash Day Demo

The demo is free and lives on its own Steam page, which the developer linked in the October 13th release announcement with the words "The free demo is available now." The official Trash Day store page also carries a Download Trash Day Demo button with a Learn more link to that demo page, so there are two easy entry points:

  • Visit the official Trash Day Steam store page.
  • Click Download Trash Day Demo, then Download on the demo page.
  • The demo costs nothing: the release announcement says the free demo is available now.

The store page also lists the minimum requirements for the game: Windows 11, an Intel Core i5 at 2.5 GHz or equivalent, 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 1060 or RX 6600 XT, DirectX 11, and 4 GB of available storage.

What Is in the Trash Day Demo

The store page (checked 2026-10-07) puts the demo's size in plain words: "Played the demo? That was only one area!" The full game hauls the wagon across six areas, so the demo covers one and the full game adds five more, plus new obstacles and a full soundtrack. Pre-release scope information like this is labelled with its date.

The Next Fest launch announcement describes what the one area actually contains. You and your team push, pull, and steer the wagon through the wilderness to haul away as much loot as possible, using planks, bear traps, and raccoon strength to clear obstacles. Guard dogs, bee swarms, and high-speed highway traffic act as the hazards, and the sandbox lets you throw a frisbee, toot a trumpet, or coordinate a synchronized patty-cake dance.

Loot ties into progression: you scavenge valuable trash, deposit it at checkpoints, and buy tools, wagon repairs, or cosmetics. The announcement adds that the game is balanced for co-op, so bring a squad of up to 6 players, and links the official Discord to find a crew. The release announcement frames it the same way: you and up to five friends can scavenge trash and load the wagon.

Solo is technically possible, the store page says, but "the wagon is a lot for one raccoon." For the exact co-op headcount and how it compares, see our Trash Day player count guide. Trash Day is listed on Steam as an Action and Adventure game, made by Off By One Games, a small team with over a decade of experience working together on Rocket League.

Wagon Troubleshooting: Flips, Wheels, and Checkpoints

The store page's own advice is short: "Lose a wheel? Put it back on. Flip it? Flip it back." The Trash Day demo patch notes then spell out exactly how, and every fix below is labelled with the patch that introduced it, as of the saved news feed (2026-10-07).

Flips:

  • Patch 2026.0.1.12581 added a pull to flip prompt to the front leash when the cart is upside down.
  • Patch 2026.0.1.12712 made the tip-over recovery trigger bigger and more accurate, expanded the visibility distance of the flip cart text, and added the prompt to both leashes.
  • Patch 2026.0.1.13212 lowered the wagon's center of mass slightly to reduce accidental tip-overs and made idle braking engage faster at low speeds so the wagon does not slowly drift away.
  • Since patch 2026.0.1.12712 you can no longer deposit loot in the cart while it is fully tipped over.

Wheels:

  • Patch 2026.0.1.12712 halved rolling damage to wheels, added a prompt to tighten wheels when they take damage and your hands are free, and made detached wheels display as damaged.
  • Patch 2026.0.1.12581 added a Tighten with impact wrench prompt when attaching a new wheel.
  • Patch 2026.0.1.13212 has freshly attached wheels start tightened at 20% instead of 1% so they do not fall off right away.
  • Patch 2026.0.1.12497 changed wheel damage to be based on speed rather than distance traveled.

Checkpoints:

  • Patch 2026.0.1.13212 added a brand-new checkpoint at the start of Mountain Pass.
  • Patch 2026.0.1.12712 adjusted checkpoint trigger boundaries for more accurate activation and stopped checkpoints from triggering after a game over.
  • Hotfix 2026.0.1.12755 fixed the checkpoint before the road spawning players under the terrain.

Will the Demo Stay Up After Release?

The short answer is that nobody official has said. The one community thread on the topic, How long is the demo staying up?, asks whether the demo will only be available up till the release date or continue past it. As of the saved page (2026-10-07) the thread has zero replies, so there is no answer to link to, and we will not guess on the developers' behalf.

The saved news feed likewise contains no announcement about a demo removal date, a typical completion time, or whether demo progress carries over into the full game. Until the developers say otherwise, treat those three points as unconfirmed rather than promised features.

What is confirmed: the full game is planned for October 13, 2026, and the demo is available now (as of 2026-10-07 the store page said the game plans to unlock in approximately 6 days). If your squad wiped out and you want to know how many raccoons can retry together, our player count page covers that.

FAQ

Where do I download the trash day demo?

On Steam, for free. Go to the official Trash Day store page and use the Download Trash Day Demo button, or follow the demo link in the developer's release announcement.

How much of the game does the trash day demo show?

One area. The store page says the full game hauls the wagon across six areas, and that the full game adds five more areas, new obstacles, and a full soundtrack on top of the demo's one area (as of 2026-10-07).

My wagon flipped over, or a wheel fell off. What now?

Use the pull to flip prompt on the leash to right the cart, and tighten loose wheels with the impact wrench; since patch 2026.0.1.13212, freshly attached wheels start at 20% so they stay on longer. The patches above also reduced accidental tip-overs and halved rolling wheel damage.

Will the trash day demo keep working after the full game launches?

Unknown. The community thread asking that exact question has no replies, and no saved official announcement says whether the demo stays up past October 13, 2026. Treat the removal date, completion time, and save transfer as unconfirmed for now.
